The Bavaria Brewery announced its commitment to the elimination of all net carbon emissions in its production chains by 2040, in line with its purpose of promoting the transformation of Colombia and following the objectives of its long-term socio-environmental strategy.

To meet this objective, the company has actions in four lines: climate action, circular economy, smart agriculture and conservation of water resources. For this, it has defined short, medium and long-term objectives , as a permanent effort to contribute to the mitigation of climate change in Colombia.

On the subject of climate action, Bavaria will adopt renewable energies in 100% of its operations by 2025 from the use of solar panels and non-conventional renewable energies, in all its production plants.

Its model includes the incorporation of solar panels to provide about 15% of the electrical energy of the operation and the purchase of electrical energy from non-conventional renewable sources to cover the remaining 85%.

"Added to these bets are the company's initiatives aimed at scaling regenerative agriculture practices to enrich soil health and improve the ability to capture carbon, as well as nature-based solutions for the conservation of hydrographic basins. On these fronts, the company has managed to protect more than 8,500 hectares of páramo and plant 325,000 native trees, which will help tackle climate change, ”the company explained.

The company's objectives are added to those of other countries in the world —including Colombia— that have implemented strategies to reduce pollution and the effect of climate change.

In fact, according to a study carried out by KPMG, Norway, the United Kingdom and Sweden are the best performing countries in the race towards achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions, while South America stands out for Chile.

The consultancy analyzed the initiatives of 31 countries that are responsible for around three quarters of global GHG emissions and only nine of them have created and implemented net zero emission laws.

According to the analysis: "One of the biggest obstacles in this area is the lack of execution capacity, present in almost all countries, even in some of the most developed ones."

As for Latin America, Chile, Brazil and Argentina are among the 25 countries with the best performance. Chile ranks 16th in the global ranking .

“Argentina, Brazil and Chile have abundant natural resources to produce energy from renewable and sustainable sources. They also have the knowledge and access to technologies that enable them to implement ambitious energy transition plans, although to varying degrees, they face a lack of efficient control mechanisms ”, commented Juanita López, managing partner of KPMG IMPACT and leader of ESG of KPMG in South America.

The greatest obstacle for Latin American countries in the race towards net emissions is the absence of efficient control mechanisms, explains the analysis.

The study found that a large part of the mistakes that are made in terms of the implementation of zero-emission strategies is that it is thought that everything should fall on the government, when it comes to an issue that must be worked together with the key economic sectors : electricity and energy, industry, transport, construction and agriculture, land use and forestry.
